Afternoon Tea
The afternoon tea is traditionally at 4 o’clock. Afternoon tea is not common these days because most of the people are working at that time. However, you can still have afternoon tea at the many tea rooms in England. Traditionally it consists of tea (or coffee) served with sweet and savoury snacks.
High Tea
The high tea was traditionally at 6 o’clock. Nowadays people call it the evening meal, dinner or supper.
The working population did not have afternoon tea. They had a meal about midday, and a meal after work, between five and seven o’clock. This meal was called ‘high tea’ or just ‘tea’.
It was traditionally a substantial meal with delicious sweet foods and savoury snacks ( = hartige hapjes.
